Dr. Melanie Ornstein, MD FRCSC, is a Royal College certified specialist in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Ornstein has a BSc in Rehabilitation Medicine from McGill University and worked as a paediatric Occupational Therapist for 10 years. She worked with children with physical and/or cognitive disabilities and worked in the neonatal follow-up clinic with prematurely born infants at Women’s College Hospital, Toronto.


Dr. Ornstein obtained her MA, Masters of Arts in Education, from OISE (Ontario Institute for Studies in Education) at the University of Toronto in 1992.  She then obtained her MD, Doctor of Medicine, in 1996 and completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 2001, both at University of Toronto.


Dr. Ornstein is an Obstetrician Gynecologist at Michael Garron Hospital since 2001. She has expertise in general Obstetrics and Gynecology and minimally invasive surgery. She also practices Paediatric and Adolescent Gynecology, previously at SickKids Hospital, Toronto, and currently at MGH and Open Arms.


Dr. Ornstein has a special interest in working with the developmentally disabled population and promoting their equal access to gynecologic and reproductive health care. Dr. Ornstein has extensively lectured and published locally, nationally, and internationally in this field. She has acted as a consultant for Surrey Place Center, Toronto, a center providing care and services to individuals with autism and developmental disabilities. Her goal is to address societal and health care professional misconceptions and biases regarding this population, thereby improving health care provision.


Dr. Ornstein is actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate education at the University of Toronto and Ryerson University. She currently is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Toronto. She provides clinical education to medical students, residents, midwifery students. She has been honoured to receive many academic teaching awards, locally and nationally, recognizing her teaching excellence and dedication.
